Puranmal Lahoti Government Polytechnic, Latur holds the crown of first private
technical Diploma award institute in India, having location Latitude : 37.751˚ and location
Longitude : -97.822˚ on global map. The visionaries Late Mr. Babasaheb Paranjape, Late Mr.
Swami Ramanand Teerth, Late Mr. Dewisinhji Chavan, Late Mr. Puranmal Lahoti had decided
to start a technical institute at Latur in 1954. The land for the institute is donated by Mr.
Kayamkhani. The building and equipment expenditure was done by collection of donations from
community. The funds were insufficient. Mr. Puranmalji Lahoti had provided all the required
funds to bring the dream of Technical Institute in to reality. Unfortunately the nature has taken
him away and the rest of the members have decided to name the institute as "Puranmal Lahoti
Smarak Technical Institute" inaugurated in 1956.

The institute was started with a single course named as "Overseer" related to Civil
Engineering. Subsequently added the stream of Mechanical engineering. As the Directors of the
Trust were unable to expand the institute, they passed a resolution to handover the institute along
with all assets and staff to Government of Maharashtra. The additional condition was to keep the
name of Late Puranmal Lahoti in the beginning of Government Polytechnic. Government of
Maharashtra aptly agreed to the proposal and on 01-12-1962 it is taken over by Government of
Maharashtra under the name, "Puranmal Lahoti Government Polytechnic, Latur".
With the growth of institute, currently six branches of Engineering namely Civil
Engineering (120 intake), Mechanical Engineering (120 intake), Electrical Engineering (60
intake), Electronics Engineering (60 intake), Computer Engineering (60 intake) and Information
Technology (60 intake) are in for having Total intake of the institute as 420.

The institute was ranked at the top at national level, in the survey conducted by NITTTR,
Bhopal (The Technical Teacher's Training Institute, Bhopal) in 1988. The institute is well
equipped and having all the facilities required for implementation of curriculum in best possible
manner. The institute has Girls Hostel for 324 students and Boy's Hostel for 270 students. The
facility for conduct of Online Lectures, Multimedia class rooms, Ground for outdoor games and
seminar hall along with enriched library is available. The additional new Administrative-cum-
Academic Building of 1,20,000 sqft. is in final stage of completion. The well qualified Teaching
and Ministerial Staff forms the strong back bone of the institute. In short this institute is amongst
the vital few institutes of highest rank and consistently fetching excellent results imparting
Diploma Education in the State of Maharashtra.
